Independent stories for brighter, stranger, more livable futures

Submit to Burnline

We're looking for any short fiction or art that you'd categorize as "solarpunk." Themes, characters, and plot could range to just about anything, but we prefer settings where we're all living in a more sustainable world.

Fiction

Please submit work you would specifically describe as solarpunk (or something close to it). No cover letter is needed for submissions, but feel free to include any information about your relationship to the story if you feel that it's relevant.

Submissions are open to creators ages 18 and older.

Word limit
500–10,000 words.
Pay rate
Because Burnline is currently a free magazine without advertising, we cannot offer payment at this time. Our goal is to eventually pay a competitive per-word rate, but we are not there yet. We understand if that makes submission a non-starter for you.
How to submit
Use the Burnline submission form to send your story. Select Fiction, fill in the required details, and upload your manuscript as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf. Please submit one piece per form.

Credit
Selected writers will be fully credited in the magazine and on the site using the name, portfolio link, and profile or social handles they would like included.
Rights
Submitting your work does not transfer any rights to Burnline. You must own or control the rights needed to submit it. If your work is accepted, you will retain full copyright and Burnline will ask only for non-exclusive permission to publish, display, distribute, and promote the accepted work as part of Burnline Magazine and on burnlinemag.com, with attribution. You remain free to publish or submit the work elsewhere. Publication permission will be confirmed with you in writing before publication.

Human-created work only

No AI-generated or AI-assisted work will be accepted. Burnline is interested in fiction created by people.

Simultaneous submissions are welcome

Please submit elsewhere while you wait! Just let us know promptly if another publication accepts the story.
